Warning: this story contains spoilers from Season 1 of "Every Year After," now streaming on Prime Video.

After weathering such tempestuous waters at Barry's Bay, is smooth sailing in store?

"Every Year After," Prime Video's adaptation of Carley Fortune's beloved 2022 novel, "Every Summer After" (now streaming), depicts the slow-burning romance of teenage neighbors Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall) and Sam Florek (Matt Cornett), its eventual demise and potential revival over eight episodes.

"It feels like their souls are kind of made of the same thing," Soverall, 24, tells USA TODAY. "It feels like they're just constantly drawn back to each other, and their thoughts are always laced with each other."

Starting in 2011, Percy and Sam savor summers together in the quaint Canadian town. After years of friendship, things take a romantic turn. But when Sam is overwhelmed with his college workload, he breaks up with Percy − and that's where things take a turn.

What did Percy do? Is it forgivable in stars Sadie Soverall and Matt Cornett's eyes?

Utterly heartbroken after the breakup, Percy sleeps with his older brother, Charlie Florek (Michael Bradway). Soverall says she can understand the emotions that led to her character's decision.

"I think she was coming from a place of a lot of frustration and a lot of hurt and a lot of darkness," she explains. "And I think in that summer, Charlie was like the sun for her. He was there for her, he distracted her, and was really kind… I think they were both feeling very lost, and they found a lot of solace in each other."

Percy and Charlie vowed to keep their indiscretion a secret. But it comes to light when Percy returns to Barry's Bay, after being away for a decade, to attend the funeral of Sam and Charlie's mom, Sue Florek (Elisha Cuthbert). Sam's feelings return after spending time with Percy, and he breaks up with his girlfriend, Taylor (Roan Curtis), whom he thought he'd propose to. When he tries to rekindle things with Percy, she comes clean, and Sam is devastated by their dalliance.

The blow to Sam's relationship with his brother and future with Percy "immediately sends him into probably the darkest place he's ever been in his life," Cornett, 27, tells USA TODAY. "He has a full-on spiral, and it's something that is really hard for him to pull himself out of and to move past."

In the finale, Sam and Percy have sex after his mom's service, but he quickly tells her that they have no future. "I do want so much to forgive you," Sam says, "but I don't think I can do this."

Attempting to reconnect might've been Sam's way of testing the waters, Cornett says.

"Being like, 'Let's see if I can even attempt to try and have something without thinking about it,'" he says. "And I think, in that moment, it is still too fresh for Sam, and I think that he realizes that."

Sam and Percy reunite later in the finale, after she's spruced up his mom's tavern bequeathed to Percy. "You came home," Percy says.

The two exchange wide smiles but no further words.

What does the 'Every Year After' finale mean for Sam and Percy? Will there be a Season 2?

From Cornett's perspective, Sam "comes back wanting to follow his heart."

"I think even though he's had this time to think about it and sit with the Percy and Charlie of it all, I think that he still is like, 'I can't get over this girl.' And this is my person," he says. "And I want to show her that I'm willing to show up and entertain the idea of a conversation and hopefully be able to start over and explore the opportunity of being friends again."

Ultimately, Cornett says, the hope is that it may lead "to something more" between Percy and Sam.

Ahead of a second season, which has yet to be greenlit, Cornett is hoping for a reconciliation between Percy and Sam − one that portrays a rebuilding of their friendship.

"I think that they both have hurt each other in different ways, and so I think that those conversations need to be had," he says, noting that they also need to discuss "starting from the beginning and starting somewhere fresh and new and creating a new version of who Sam and Percy are going to be."

The long-kept secret between Charlie Florek (Michael Bradway) and Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall) is disclosed in Season 1 of "Every Year After."

"I think that they need to be friends again first," Cornett adds, "before they can even entertain the idea of fully, fully diving into loving each other again."

Soverall is also on board for things heating up down the road.

"Oh, absolutely," she says. "I think they are meant for each other."
