Brie's mom, Kendra, shared on Instagram that her late daughter had once told her, “If anything ever happens to me, I'll come visit you as a dragonfly”
Brie Bird's family is honoring her close to six months after her death.
On May 24, Kendra Bird — whose 9-year-old daughter Brie died in December after sharing her diagnosis with stage 4 cancer to over 1 million followers online — posted a video showing how their family is continuing to commemorate her late daughter.
“When Brielle was on hospice, we would lay together in the playroom, reading children's books about heaven, while I quietly tried to survive the thought of losing her. One night, as we read, she looked at me and said, ‘If anything ever happens to me, I'll come visit you as a dragonfly,' ” wrote Kendra in the caption of a time-lapse video from their backyard.
“So this garden is for her,” continued Kendra. “A dragonfly-shaped from grief, love, memory, and the hands of the people who miss her most.”
In the clip, the whole family pitched in as they constructed a place to plant flowers that took the shape of the special insect.
Two days later, Kendra also posted a heartbreaking video to Instagram of Brie getting ready for third grade, acknowledging in the caption how difficult it has been to see families share that their COVID babies are now entering kindergarten in 2026 while their family's year has been filled with “headstones, grief, and children we can no longer hold.”

Brie was first diagnosed with cancer in 2020, when doctors discovered an 8-centimeter tumor on her abdomen in addition to cancer that had spread elsewhere in her back. After roughly two years, the Birds celebrated that Brie was cancer-free — but her neuroblastoma returned in January 2024.
She entered hospice in July, and later decided that she wanted to live out the rest of her life at her family's house.

As her story gained traction online, it caught the attention of the cast of Wicked, who surprised her with a care package and a private screening of Wicked: For Good several months before the movie-musical hit theaters.

Since Brie's death in December, Kendra has continued to open up about her grief in the wake of losing her daughter.
In January, she wrote on Instagram that taking down her family's Christmas decorations feels like panic, disbelief, guilt for breathing, anger at the calendar, and a tenderness so deep it hurts to touch,” as it reminded her of a time before her daughter had died.
