The season 22 finale is Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver's last episode of Grey's Anatomy.

The finale begins with McKidd's Owen sinking in his car after a bridge collapse.

The exes previously fought after Raver's Teddy considered moving to Paris for a job opportunity.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Grey's Anatomy season 22, episode 18, "Bridge over Troubled Water."

It wouldn't be a Grey's Anatomy season finale without some kind of catastrophe. Last year, a hostage situation (and an explosion) rocked Grey Sloan. In Thursday's season 22 finale, the collapse of a local bridge is filling its halls with the injured — two of whom will be all too familiar to fans.

The episode is also notable as it's the final appearances of stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver. As Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Kim Raver, the pair have been staples of the medical drama for well over 15 years. McKidd joined in 2008 at the beginning of season 5, with Raver slipping on her stethoscope the following year.

Their on-again, off-again romance — which includes a marriage, a divorce, a detour in Iraq, and two children — has been an ongoing source of bliss and frustration for devoted fans, who will no doubt be curious as to whether a happy ending is in store for them.

It's not looking so good heading into the finale. Teddy's offer of a coveted job in Paris leads to a fight between the exes, which remains unresolved as Owen is caught in the bridge collapse, his car sinking into the water with him inside it.

So, does Owen make it out alive? Will this longsuffering couple get their happy ending? Or is there no saving these star-crossed lovers? Join us as break down the Grey's Anatomy season 22 finale.

Does Owen die?

No, Owen is not doomed to drown in the depths of Elliott Bay, as the aptly titled "Bridge Over Troubled Water" begins with the bruised doctor muscling his way out of the car as it sinks.

He surfaces on the ruins of the bridge, where a family is trapped inside their car. With the help of first responders, he's able to save all four members of the family — though some fare better than others. To escape the wreckage, the family's pre-teen daughter needs to have her leg amputated, which Owen manages to execute while keeping her young brother occupied.

Josh, the children's father, is also in rough shape, his chest having been crushed by the steering wheel. Owen oversees the tricky process of freeing him.

Back at Grey Sloan, Teddy frets over his whereabouts, knowing that he takes the bridge to work everyday. She beats herself up over their fight. "It seems dumb now," she says.

She's horrified to learn Owen's car was found in the water, but heartened to find out he wasn't inside it. Later, while treating Josh's wife, she sees that someone performed a cricothyrotomy on the woman with a keychain tool, one she knows Owen carries with him. She knows he's alive.

This is confirmed when she walks into an operating room to find Owen operating on Josh. "Dr. Altman," he says, "I could really use some help here."

"Whatever you need, I'm right here," she replies.

Following the surgery, Owen and Teddy set aside their drama and decide to forge a future together.

"I choose us," Teddy declares, telling him she plans to turn down the job in Paris to stay with him and their children. "I needed some time to figure out what I wanted for myself, and what I want is you and our kids. I want us... I have lived all over the world, and the only thing, the only thing that makes me feel like home is you."

She's confused when he says he wants her to go... until he says that he and the kids are going with her. It's his turn to follow her as she pursues her dreams.

"I have spent my whole life chasing adventure, but the best thing I've ever done is our family," he says. "I would do anything for the three of you. You're my life."

After a montage of some of the characters' most memorable moments, we watch them hold each other as they say goodbye to Grey Sloan. "Hey," he says, "let's go home." And so they do.

While McKidd tells Entertainment Weekly that he isn't convinced Owen will be the biggest fan of Paris, he loves that Owen is supporting Teddy. "For a long time, Teddy would always be in the wake of Owen's decisions and having to react to him and following and chasing him. It was time for Owen to step up and go, ‘I'm going to follow you. I'm going to let you take the lead in this,’” he explains. “And as they recommit to each other and realize from this finale episode is that they really can't live without each other.

What else happens in the Grey's Anatomy season 22 finale?

Elsewhere in Grey Sloan, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is horrified to learn that her partner Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) was injured in the bridge collapse. The only person she trusts to operate on him is Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who's not supposed to be operating on anyone after she was suspended for covering up a protocol violation by resident Dr. Benson "Blue" Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.). This doesn't sit well with Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), but he lets it slide after Miranda successfully fixes up Nick.

As Nick recovers, Meredith proposes. "Marry me," she says. She doesn't want a fancy wedding — just him. He accepts.

Blue, who was fired last week for giving a patient an experimental, FDA-denied treatment, defies his bosses by stepping in to treat those injured in the bridge collapse. Teddy supports him, telling Blue to make his case to Richard, which he does. But Richard is unmoved, demanding that he hand over his badge. By episode's end, Blue is no longer a doctor at Grey Sloane.

Finally, Dr. Toni Wright (Jennifer Landon) arrives at the home of Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) to say she's falling for her. But it's an awkward time, as Shepherd is (gasp!) in bed with Dr. Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush).

“You immediately get that question of like, ‘What happened? This is insane,’” Bush tells EW, noting she was "giggling to myself" reading the script (after her initial shock). "Because from the moment that Cass showed up at Grace Sloan, the whole gay internet has been asking for this. And I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Writers room, I see you!’” (Read more from Bush about the big plot twist here.)
