Milla Jovovich tells PEOPLE that she is pondering her self-identity after she celebrated her 50th birthday in December

The actress says she "honestly would love to just take a little break and refill" after trying her hand at producing with her most recent movies, including her new action film Protector

Milla Jovovich, who turned 50 in December, is now reassessing her place in the world as she embarks on a new decade.

"I'm still figuring it out, to be honest," Jovovich tells PEOPLE about her milestone birthday, while discussing her new action movie Protector. "It's definitely been a lot of changes for me as a woman. Perimenopause for one, mood swings — doing a movie like Protector didn't help because it was really challenging for me physically and then a lot of distraction editing it and scoring it and being such a integral part to how it was edited and focusing on it."

In Protector, Jovovich portrays a military veteran who sets out to save her teenage daughter after she is kidnapped by sex traffickers. In real life, the Fifth Element star produced the movie in addition to acting in it. She says her work on the project kept her busy throughout her most recent trip around the sun.

Jovovich has a busy life outside of acting: she shares three kids — Ever, 18, Dashiel, 15, and Osian, 6 — with her husband Paul W.S. Anderson, whom she met on the set of their 2002 movie Resident Evil, the first of six films in the franchise they made together. "So we'll see," she adds. "There's a lot that I have to deal with on a personal level and take care of. My youngest is six and I'm getting to a point in my life where I'm kind of going back to like, 'Who is Milla now, outside of being a mother, outside of being an actress? What is the future?' I think it's a lot to take on."

"Really, since my birthday has been the only time that I've sort of even begun to think about myself as a human and where do I belong in the world outside of motherhood, outside of being an actor," she says.

When Jovovich finds free time away from her busy career and family life, she tells PEOPLE she enjoys working out, as well as stretching and breath work routines. The actress has two additional projects in the works, including the horror movie Twilight of the Dead and the action thriller Midnight, but after finishing wearing acting and producing hats on Protector, which she described as "a big challenge," she's looking for an opportunity to relax.

"I honestly would love to just take a little break and refill," she says when asked about any roles or movies she dreams of pursuing moving forward. "I've always talked about the fact that when you go, go, go and you create, create, create, there has to be a time of just stillness where you need to kind of get bored and not do anything and and refill your inspiration well."

"I don't really spend my time thinking about like, 'What's my dream role?' I have three kids and a home to keep organized, and it's hard to balance work and life," she adds with a laugh. "So at this point, it's really whatever resonates with me."

Protector is in theaters March 6.
