James Van Der Beek was working to change the mind of *Dawson's Creek* creator Kevin Williamson on reviving the series for a continuation before his death last month.

In a lengthy profile with *Esquire* about his return to the *Scream* universe as the director and co-writer of *Scream 7, *published Monday*, *Williamson revealed that although he had no plans to revisit the story of Dawson Leery and co., his leading man had a different perspective. "James and I talked about rebooting *Dawson's Creek* several times," Williamson told the outlet. "He wanted to do it."

Van Der Beek wanted more than to just return to the Creek; he wanted to have a hand in telling the story that reunited him and his costars, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, Busy Phillips, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe, and whoever else was willing to join.

"There was a moment where he was going to write it — and he had a really great idea for it," Williamson recalled. "He had a beautiful plan. Then I think he got on a show and everybody got busy. It never happened. But there was a lot of talk about it."

The director went on, sharing, "I think it was funny. I remember I had a conversation with Katie and him once, but I just don't remember... I think it was a little along the lines of *This Is Us*. We envisioned it to have that kind of tone, because that was very popular at the time when we had been discussing it. So this [happened around] season 1 of that show."

Williamson admitted that even the studio behind the series was interested in bringing the band back together, adding that "Sony called and asked me a couple of times if I'd be interested in developing it." But Williamson wasn't interested in going back to that world, especially since the creator shared that he didn't know "what that would look like."

"I always felt like, 'Well, we did that. We finished it,'" Williamson added of wrapping the show with the series finale. "In the last episode, we jumped five years. We went to the future. The last episode of that show was the remake. So I feel very okay with that. And I don't feel the need to go back to that world, as much as I love them and would love to."

The finale had concluded the story so thoroughly for Williamson that he couldn't see what there was to continue.

"We talked about it, but Michelle Williams's character was already gone. Four had already become three. So we talked, but it didn't happen," he added.

The show premiered on The WB (now The CW) in 1998, when each of the core four cast members only had a handful of credits to their names. Van Der Beek had sizable roles in the quirky comedy *Angus *opposite George C. Scott and Kathy Bates, as well as the polarizing romantic drama *I Love You, I Love You Not*. He'd also appeared in three episodes of the daytime drama *As The World Turns*. But landing the lead role of wannabe filmmaker Dawson Leery transformed his career.

"I knew him when he was so young," Williamson recalled of Van Der Beek, who died on Feb. 11 following a diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer. "I can remember him coming to audition. I don't know what [the network and other producers] said about him, but they didn't want him. And I was like, 'Are you crazy? What's wrong with you? That's Dawson. Trust me.'"

Following Van Der Beek's death last month, the official *Dawson's Creek *account paid tribute to its star on social media by sharing a throwback photo of the actor with a caption that read, "His iconic portrayal of Dawson Leery helped define a generation of television for fans and continues to resonate with audiences today. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
