August is an exciting month for Netflix subscribers, with some of the streamer’s most popular titles returning. The month starts off with My Life with the Walter Boys Season 3, while Out Banks fans will have a bittersweet moment, with the hit show’s final season coming to Netflix Aug. 20. Additionally, Leanne Morgan’s sitcom Leanne is back for Season 2 at the end of the month.
For movie lovers, there’s a lot to get excited about in August. Particularly the film Don’t Say Good Luck, starring Sunny Sandler, Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield, and the thriller The Last House with Greta Lee and Wagner Moura.
It’s also time to watch some existing favourites before they leave Netflix Canada next month.
While film lovers head to the movie theatres to see The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s previous movies, Oppenheimer and Interstellar, are leaving the streamer. Additionally, three Wes Anderson films are being removed: The Darjeeling Limited, The French Dispatch and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
You also don’t have much time to watch all three Pitch Perfect movies before they’re removed from Netflix in August, in addition to other favourites like Crazy, Stupid, Love, Mamma Mia!, The Wolf of Wall Street, BlacKkKlansman, Lady Bird and It.

We're going back to Silver Falls in August with the return of My Life with the Walter Boys for Season 3, picking up after that explosive finale where Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) said they love each other, not knowing that Alex (Ashby Gentry) was standing right behind them, just as an ambulance shows up to take George (Marc Blucas) to the hospital.
"Everyone's reality has shattered a little bit, and they're picking up the pieces of that and trying to put it back together again," Ashby Gentry told Tudum.
"A lot of this season, more than other seasons, is about growing up, maturing, and stepping up," showrunner, creator, and executive producer Melanie Halsall added.
The Last House — Aug. 7
Starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, the sci-fi thriller The Last House, directed by Louis Leterrier, is about a family trapped in their home, with limited resources to survive and understand the mysterious threat outside.
“Growing up my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist,” Lee told Tudum. “So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.”
“I was so intrigued by the notion of what it might mean to wake up one day and be physically sealed in your home — and not even understand why,” Moura added. “I think about how my own family would respond and handle something like that. I connected with the stakes of the film and the character on a deep level because of that.”
“The storyline will evolve in ways that the audience certainly will not expect, but that is what makes this film so interesting. There are layers and twists that I can’t wait for everyone to see.”
Don’t Say Good Luck — Aug. 14
Already set to be a Netflix favourite is Don’t Say Good Luck. The film is centred around Sophie Birenbaum, played by Sunny Sandler, getting ready to star in her high school musical. But when she finds out her mom is sick, she has to navigate her own teenage experience with concern for her mom’s health, and her family’s future.
“It’s based on Laura’s own real-life story of when she got the lead in her high school musical at the same time that her mom’s cancer came back. Because it was so deeply personal and specific, it just feels so real. Even if it’s not exactly their story, people can feel connected to it,” director Julia Hart told Tudum.
The film also stars Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Jack Champion, Stephanie Beatriz and Steve Buscemi.
Outer Banks, Season 5 — Aug. 20
If you’re an Outer Banks fan, you’ve likely been emotional all week because we got the trailer the show’s final season. It picks up after John B (Chase Stokes), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) lost JJ (Rudy Pankow) at the end of Season 4.
“In Season 5, we see the most hesitation from John B, not just because of JJ’s death,” Stokes told Tudum. “He’s accepting the fact that he is a soon-to-be father and that he has responsibilities. The 16-year-old who was lying to DCS about staying with his uncle is now starting to really realize the ramifications and the repercussions of his actions.”
Everyone, including Rafe (Drew Starkey), is at rock bottom, but could JJ return? There’s a moment in the trailer where Kiara says there’s a legend that “the crown can bring back the dead,” so we’ll see where their quest to take down Groff ends up.

Leanne, Season 2 — Aug. 27
Leanne Morgan had all the elements to construct a sitcom and executed them with perfection for the first season of Leanne, which returns for Season 2 in August. As we see in the trailer for the season, Leanne and her sister Carol, played by Kristen Johnston, have to support their parents, and things seems to be getting more complicated with Leanne’s romantic life as she’s possibly having some “divorce remorse.”
