I have no interest in picking a fight with Tom Holland. The man is Spider-Man, one of my favorite Marvel characters, and he seems incredibly charming out of costume. But even heroes have blind spots, and apparently Holland’s is corn dogs.

During a Complex interview with his Odyssey co-star Matt Damon, Holland was asked to name the worst American food out there. Before choosing violence, he made one thing clear: “I like American food, though,” Holland said.

And listen, I believe him. He didn’t just wander across the pond yesterday, and he quickly names both brisket and barbecue as American foods he enjoys.

“That’s all great,” Damon agreed.

But then Holland got to the one food he apparently cannot support.

“You know what I don’t love?” Holland said. “Corn dogs.”

And he actually sounded personally offended by the concept.

“Because what the f*ck is that?” he asked.

Damon, instead of defending the honor of America’s battered hot dog, fully joined him.

“I can’t say that I disagree with you,” Damon said. “I never got it even as a kid.”

Both actors agreed that they love a hot dog. A corn dog, not so much. For Holland, the problem seems to be the stick. He said that if something is served on a stick, he expects it to be “sweet or icy.” A corn dog, unfortunately for him, is hot, fried, and very much the opposite of a popsicle.

Then came the real twist: Holland admitted he’s never actually had a corn dog.

Sir. Tom. Peter Parker. You cannot fully condemn a food you haven’t even tried. Damon, however, had no hesitation.

“Corn dogs are a horrible idea,” Damon said, “from the idea to the execution.”

The conversation then moved to the worst British food, and Holland admitted that England isn’t exactly known for its cuisine. His pick was jellied eel, which he said is commonly eaten in the East End.

Jellied. Eel.

And he has concerns about a corn dog?

I respect both the honesty and the British self-awareness, and Spider-Man, I adore you, but we need to sit down and talk this through.
