During the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal match between Argentina and England, all eyes were drawn to a tense moment between Jude Bellingham and Lionel Messi.
Cameras captured the two football stars in an animated exchange, with raised voices and gestures suggesting a clash of tempers. However, Bellingham later clarified that their interaction was far less dramatic than it appeared, explaining that they were simply discussing a foul and that there was no animosity between them.
Speaking at a press conference following England’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Argentina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Bellingham addressed questions about his first-half confrontation with Messi. The match saw both players animatedly gesturing with their arms and displaying dissatisfied expressions before eventually walking away from each other.
"We were discussing a foul, actually," Bellingham explained, downplaying the incident. "It was nothing bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal. But it was nothing big really.”

Bellingham elaborated that the brief conversation centered around a foul Messi claimed to have suffered earlier in the half. Bellingham told Messi that he thought the Argentine was strong enough to handle the challenge.
Regardless of whether any tension lingered, Bellingham emphasized the honor of sharing the field with one of football’s all-time greats, even in defeat.
"It was a privilege to play against him; it was nothing like that against him,” Bellingham said. “I'm obviously on the losing side, which hurts a lot. But a privilege to line up against one of the best."
