Warning: Dutton Ranch spoilers ahead!
Dutton Ranch wastes no time testing Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).
In season 1, episode 1, viewers find Beth and Rip soaking up their peaceful life on a ranch they purchased in Dillon, Mont., after saying goodbye to Yellowstone. But the land is merciless, and their dreams are shattered when a wildfire breaks out.
With no way to stop it, Beth rushes to get the horses out in a trailer while Rip cuts the fences in an effort to give their cattle a fighting chance. The fire devastates the area, burning down the couple's entire property.
Forced to confront what comes next, Beth and Rip decide it's time for a change of scenery — and all signs are pointing them toward Texas.
"I didn't expect Texas. I thought we would be in Montana," Hauser told PEOPLE in May 2026. "But I think, for a lot of reasons, it was the right thing to do to pull [our characters] out of [their] comfort zone."
So, why did Beth and Rip move to the Lone Star State? Here's everything to know about their relocation to Texas.

In the opening minutes of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are settling into life on their new ranch in Dillon, Mont., where they moved with their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), after selling Yellowstone. But their fresh start is quickly upended when a wildfire tears through the property.
The blaze is massive and uncontrollable. Beth and Carter manage to grab a few valuables and load the horses into a trailer, while Rip cuts the property's fences to give their cattle a chance to outrun the flames.
Rip barely makes it out alive after stopping to save a baby cow, and by the morning, there's nothing left. With their ranch destroyed, Beth and Rip are forced to decide whether to rebuild in Montana or start over somewhere new.
Rip makes a few calls, including one to former Yellowstone cowboy Walker (Ryan Bingham), who tells him about a ranch for sale in Texas. The asking price would cost everything they have, but it's still cheaper than rebuilding in Montana.
“We gave this place all we got, didn't we?” Beth asks Rip.

He nods and replies, “Sweetheart, Montana will always be our home.”

Beth and Rip ultimately purchase the Edwards Ranch, a small family-owned outfit in Rio Paloma, Texas, about an hour from the Mexico border.
“Many people wanted to buy this place. The Jacksons have been after it for 20 years, but they would have turned it into something soulless,” Jeanie Edwards (Harriet Sansom Harris) tells Beth and Rip. “I don't want this ranch to become something I can't recognize.”
Beth makes it clear she understands what Jeanie is asking of them. “I understand stewardship,” she says. “My husband and I will honor it.”
The ranch spans 5,000 acres and comes with a herd of 175 Black Angus, giving Beth and Rip a new home — and a new legacy to protect.

Edwards has one stipulation when selling the ranch: Beth and Rip have to keep her longtime ranch hand, Azul Ramos (J.R. Villarreal).
When Rip realizes they need more help, Azul suggests Zachariah Moss (Marc Menchaca), a cowboy and recovering alcoholic who is about to be released from jail.
Rip heads into town to pick him up, offering Zachariah a second chance — and giving the Dutton Ranch its first new hand under Beth and Rip's watch.

Beth and Rip's new spread may be a fresh start, but it's no match for the Jackson family's 10 Petal Ranch — a sprawling Rio Paloma outfit that rivals John Dutton's (Kevin Costner) Yellowstone in Montana.
Once in Texas, Beth sets out to find a slaughterhouse for their cattle and pays a visit to 10 Petal Meats. There, she meets Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), the powerful owner of 10 Petal Ranch.
Their interaction is chilly from the start, and Beth quickly realizes Beulah is not a potential ally — she's a new enemy.
