Vera Wang has jokes about her fashion comrades.
The fashion designer attended the 2026 Figure Skating in Harlem Igniting the Dream Gala on May 18, where she playfully dissed Anna Wintour for her signature look.
While posing at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, Wang, 76, stepped onto the carpet wearing her sunglasses before removing them so photographers could take her picture.
In videos captured on social media, including one posted by @mickmicknyc, Wang can be heard saying, "I do both, I'm not Anna Wintour."

She was likely referencing 76-year-old Wintour's affinity for wearing sunglasses wherever she goes, the shades as synonymous with her look as her bob hairstyle.
The former Vogue editor-in-chief spoke about her reason for wearing her outdoor frames for most occasions, telling CNN in 2019 they are “incredibly useful because you avoid people knowing what you're thinking about."

“They help me when I'm feeling a bit tired or sleepy,” she further told the outlet. “And maybe they've just become a crutch in part of who I am. But today I really did need them.”

Speaking with BBC in 2024, she further explained why her sunglasses are also a constant "prop" in her life. “They help me see and they help me not see,” Wintour said. “They help me be seen and not be seen.”
Although contrary to Wang's joke, Wintour has, in fact, made major appearances at the Met Gala without her eyewear, much like she did in 2022 when she showed out in a colorful look accessorized with a tiara instead of her sunnies.
As for Wang, who has created an eyewear line and described herself as a "collector" of frames, sunglasses are a form of fun self-expression.
"I think it's one of the most insane accessories,” she told 20/20 Magazine in March 2021. “It is so creative, so personal. For people to be able to transform themselves and enjoy their own creativity and experiment. I just think it's such a fun thing.” She added: “It's like a new hairdo, a new lipstick, a new eyeshadow. That is the cosmetic creativity of eyewear that I love so much. It changes the shape of your face.”
