Cam Newton ranks Matthew Stafford as NFL's best QB, makes bold statement about him
Matthew Stafford reached the mountain top of individual accolades last season, winning NFL MVP for the first time in his career. For someone who’s racked up the yards and touchdowns for nearly two decades, he finally earned the league-wide recognition he’s long deserved.
Even at 38 years old now, Stafford is considered a premier quarterback – and in Cam Newton’s opinion, the premier quarterback.
Newton ranked the top 10 QBs in the NFL on Monday and he put Stafford in the No. 1 spot. He made a bold claim about the Rams veteran, too, saying he has the “accolades to be the quarterback ever.”
“Matthew Stafford has the accolades to be the greatest quarterback ever. Top to bottom,” Newton said. “Not necessarily resume, but his arm talent and his skill. He’s the last of a dying breed of pure pocket quarterbacks. He’s so comfortable. He’s playing faster and thinking faster than everybody else, and he’s so calm doing it. That’s my No. 1. He’s the league’s MVP.”

Newton likely meant that Stafford has the skill set to be the greatest of all time, because obviously his individual awards and accolades don’t stack up against someone like Tom Brady or Joe Montana.
But it’s clear Newton thinks highly of Stafford and hit the nail on the head by saying he’s the last of a dying breed. Quarterbacks today are more mobile than ever and play from shotgun a ton. Stafford isn’t mobile and he’s at his best when dropping back from under center, especially when turning his back to the defense on play-action fakes.
Stafford completely shifted the narrative surrounding his career when he was traded to the Rams and it couldn’t have been a better move for the incredibly talented signal caller. After years of big yardage and little team success, Stafford is now checking both boxes in Los Angeles as a productive and winning quarterback.
