A man in England has been accused of killing his neighbor's fish with detergent amid a dispute over pond noise.

Gerry Duffy, 76, appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court in London, on Tuesday, April 14, and rejected claims that he threw motor oil from his window into a pond belonging to his next-door neighbor, Andrea Ptohides, according to the PA Media news agency, per The Independent.

Duffy had previously complained about the noise from the pond in Ptohides' garden, as the pair share a fence in the London suburb of Barnet, U.K. newspaper The Telegraph, reported.

Prosecutors said Duffy “threatened to take matters into his own hands” if his neighbor did not take action, because the sounds were causing him to lose sleep, according to local news outlet LBC.

Duffy denies all four charges against him, which include one count of unlawfully destroying fish and three counts of damaging property, according to LBC, The Independent and The Telegraph.

The outlets reported that on March 20, Duffy allegedly damaged the pond by throwing oil into it. Four days later, the water pipes for the pond were found to have been cut.

Ptohides reviewed CCTV footage and allegedly saw Duffy climbing into his garden the same day, according to the outlets.

On March 26, Ptohides said he found three of his carp dead in the pond. He believes that detergent was poured into it, per the reports.

Ptohides checked camera footage again and claims that he saw Duffy had gone into his garden between 2.32 a.m. and 3.08 a.m. that day, the outlets added.

Duffy denies all four charges against him, and he was given conditional bail, according to PA Media, LBC and The Telegraph.

He will face trial at Willesden Magistrates' Court in London on August 4, per the outlets.

Willesden Magistrates' Court was contacted by PEOPLE for further information and verification, but did not immediately respond.
