Basketball fans love players who talk trash. If a star isn't backing down and going at his opponents with intensity, it can boost their popularity a lot. However, it can go both ways. When a player known for jawing loses, their own words can come back to haunt them.
Angel Reese is known in the WNBA as one of the biggest trash-talkers. A clip of her from the WNBA Finals, seemingly talking to Aminata Gueye, has gone viral. So when she put up less than 10 points and her team lost Game 7, fans naturally came back at her with a vengeance.
Unfortunately, basketball players are only judged based on results. While Reese's playoff domination has led to a lot of praise coming her way, her shortcomings when it mattered the most have similarly led to mockery. The WNBA spaces can be especially toxic, as some fans have shown.
Reese had just eight points in Game 7, and that opened the door for some serious ridicule to come her way.
"She was too focused on the theatrics the basketball gods humbled her," one person said. "I can sleep well knowing she'll NEVER win a championship," another wildly claimed. "Angel lost, let us all celebrate and relax for another year now," a third comment read.
"All of her deficiencies as a player showed up in the last four games. A catastrophic meltdown by a star player, especially after she was talking cash," a fourth reply read. "Now that the Dream have lost, this is the moment that will haunt Reese forever," a fifth individual said on X.
For Reese, even if the end has been disappointing, it has been a season filled with great growth and success. There will always be those that don't like her. But if she can use this experience to bounce back and actually win the Finals next time her team makes it, it would likely shut all of these people up.
