Elton John says he is "grateful for every single day" following a life-changing decision he made 36 years ago. The legendary Rocketman star recently took to Instagram to commemorate a significant milestone in his sobriety journey.
The 79-year-old singer shared a photo of himself on social media raising a glass of his own alcohol-free wine, Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, alongside the caption: "36 years sober today. Raising a 0% glass to life. Grateful for every single day."
He also shared the image on his Instagram Story, setting it to his iconic 1983 hit "I'm Still Standing." This comes after Elton John paid tribute to David Hockney following the artist's death at 88.

A number of his famous friends were quick to offer their support, with Alan Carr and Brooklyn Beckham's wife, Nicola Peltz, posting clapping and love-heart emojis.
Journalist Susannah Constantine wrote: "My love. My life. My best friend," while Loose Women's Janet Street Porter commented: "So impressive! Well done xxxx."

Throughout the years, Elton has been candid about his struggle with a severe dependency on alcohol and drugs, an addiction so dangerous he believes it nearly cost him his life, according to the Express, reports the Daily Star.

His experimentation with drugs and alcohol began during the early years of his music career in the 1970s, with his dependency hitting rock bottom in the 1980s. He entered rehabilitation in July 1990 and has maintained his sobriety ever since.
Elton's battles were documented in a biographical film about his life, as he told Variety: "The life I was leading, flying on the Starship [his private plane], living in beautiful houses, buying things left, right and centre - it was not a normal life.

"Not the sort of life I came from anyway. I lost complete touch with that. I vowed when I did change my life that that would never happen again." Elton disclosed that his substance abuse led to persistent health issues: "There were times I was having chest pains or staying up for three days at a time. I used to have spasms and be found on the floor, and they'd put me back to bed, and half an hour later I'd be doing the same. It's crazy."
Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs is an alcohol-free sparkling wine that was launched in January 2026 by the singer and his husband, David Furnish, in partnership with Benchmark Drinks.
