In a recent interview, Linwood Boomer reflected on what he learned from working with Michael Landon on Little House on the Prairie

The Malcolm in the Middle creator said Landon's approach to working with child actors inspired him to make sure the young stars of his own sitcom were able to enjoy a normal childhood while on set

Boomer explained that protecting kids from adult responsibilities became one of the most important lessons he carried with him throughout his television career

Long before he became the creative force behind Malcolm in the Middle, Linwood Boomer was learning lessons and taking notes on a very different television set.

The actor, who portrayed Adam Kendall on Little House on the Prairie, recently reflected on how his time working alongside Michael Landon shaped the way he ran his own hit series 20 years later.

Speaking on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, Boomer, 70, explained that while Little House didn't directly influence the creation of Malcolm in the Middle, it left a lasting impression on how he believed a production should treat its youngest performers.

"Little kids should not be full-time employees," he told host Joe Vulpis. "You know, they should not have adult kind of jobs and adult kind of responsibilities. And I think it can be very harmful to a kid to be in that situation where they're supporting the family and they're sort of the authority figure or power figure in a family, and they're like 9, you know, they're not equipped to handle it."

That philosophy became a guiding principle during the production of Malcolm in the Middle, the Emmy-winning sitcom that ran for seven seasons on Fox between 2000 and 2006.

Boomer said he intentionally created an environment where the show's young cast members could enjoy a normal childhood despite starring on a major network series.

"We're not going to call their agents if they show up five minutes late because they were busy playing," he explained. "We're not going to give them lectures about what they need to do. We're not going to tell the teachers that they have to delay school a little bit and keep it quiet because, you know, we need to get this shot in."

And according to Boomer, maintaining that balance required discipline behind the scenes. Productions involving children operate under strict labor regulations, and he made it a point to follow those rules without exception. The commitment, he said, was inspired by the example Landon set years earlier on Little House on the Prairie.

"I think that has always been like a thing that I carry because I saw Michael was really good about that with the kids," Boomer said. "And the hours were set up so that the kids could be kids. And he ran the show, he had it organized enough that those situations where we're not going to get a shot with the kid because the kid says he has to go home, and we, you know, wasted time on this other thing, and now we're going to ask the kid to, you know, waive his rights. That never happened."

"It was sort of like, we have to get this organized in a way to make sure we get our stuff on time, and we're not, you know, even tempted to ask the kids or their parents to bend the rules a little bit," he added. "Which worked out."

Boomer joined Little House on the Prairie in 1978, playing Adam Kendall, a teacher at a school for blind students who eventually marries Mary Ingalls, played by Melissa Sue Anderson. He remained with the series through 1981, appearing in 35 episodes before later transitioning into writing, producing and eventually creating Malcolm in the Middle.

More recently, Boomer has also shared his thoughts on the upcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot.

In an interview with Collider earlier this year, he expressed enthusiasm for the new adaptation, noting that it appears to draw more heavily from Laura Ingalls Wilder's original books than the classic television series did.

"I know the world of it is completely different. It's much closer to the books," he said. "Michael Landon just had that thing of that family and then just ran with it. It was a great thing for what it was, but it wasn't what the books were, which was a little bit grimmer of a life."

Boomer believes modern audiences may be especially receptive to a version that embraces the harsher realities depicted in Wilder's novels.

"To me, I think it's much more appropriate now because I think people understand that vocabulary, that things can sort of be grim and really tough, and you can still have that loving family in that situation, and it still works."

Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9 on Netflix.
