Prince William is set to follow him as king in the future
There are currently 64 royal family members in the line of succession
Today, King Charles is on the British throne, with his older son, Prince William, set to take his place when the time comes. But what happens after that?
The line of succession for the British throne is long and rooted in centuries of history. It's also been known to change pretty frequently — each time a senior royal welcomes another child into the family, the order switches around again.
It's rare that someone is removed from the line of succession, but it has happened. There have also been calls for the former Prince Andrew to be taken out of the line after he was stripped of his royal titles and honors in 2025. However, to do so would require an Act of Parliament.
See the entire list of British nobility in order of their proximity to being the monarch of the United Kingdom, from the second in line to the 64th, and learn more about them here.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II in Sept. 2022, her eldest child immediately acceded to the throne and became King Charles III. His coronation took place on May 6, 2023.
His wife, Queen Camilla, would not be next in the line of succession; instead, she will be given the title of Queen Dowager when Prince William accedes.

For the first time in history, a female royal's spot in line to the throne was not bumped by the arrival of a younger brother. Thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, birth order determines who will become the next king or queen of the U.K., regardless of gender, making her third in line.

Andrew is Queen Elizabeth's second-oldest son. While he was second in line to the throne when he was born, he has moved down to eighth place as Charles had children and grandchildren.
The former Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duty in 2019 due to criticism surrounding his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. In the fall of 2025, King Charles stripped his brother of his royal titles and honors, including those of a prince and the Duke of York. However, he currently retains his spot in the line of succession.

Lady Amelia's two older siblings were confirmed in the Catholic faith and therefore gave up their succession rights. As such, she is the only heir of her father to maintain a position in the line of succession, at 44th.
