- In 2020, Morgan Metzer finalized her divorce from her abusive husband, Rodney.

- Shortly after, Rodney broke into her home and violently attacked her.

- Rodney is currently serving his sentence at Baldwin State Prison in Hardwick, Ga.

Rodney Metzer's life seemed ordinary from the outside, but his private life told a darker story. From teenage romance to marriage and raising twins, his relationship with Morgan Metzer reportedly became cruel and abusive over time.

That pattern of alleged gaslighting and violence culminated in a horrifying assault on Jan. 1, 2021, just weeks after their divorce was finalized.

The shocking attack later became the basis for the 2024 Lifetime movie *Gaslit by My Husband*, which has since found a new audience on Netflix and entered the streamer's top 10 movies chart.

Here's everything to know about what happened in real life and where Rodney Metzer is now.

Who is Rodney Metzer?

Rodney Metzer

On the *48 Hours* episode "The Batman Intruder," Morgan said that Rodney initially always made her feel like the center of his world. When they met, she was just 14 and he was 17.

After years of dating, they married in 2009. Within a year, their union was overshadowed by tragedy. Rodney's younger brother Kevin died of leukemia, and shortly after, the couple's first child died at just 18 days old.

By the time the couple had twins in 2012, Rodney was already unraveling. Losing his income only made things worse, according to Morgan. "He had so many jobs," she said on *48 Hours*. "His main one, when he lost all of his money, was he was being a day trader for himself."

From there, Morgan said Rodney turned controlling, violent, and manipulative. He allegedly twisted reality to make her feel she was to blame for the abuse he was inflicting.

She also accused Rodney of dragging their kids into his lies, staging accidents just to pin them on her. One incident she recalled on *48 Hours* was particularly shocking: Rodney allegedly rolled himself down the stairs and then told the kids that she had pushed him.

What happened to Rodney's ex-wife, Morgan?

After enduring years of manipulation, physical and psychological torment, and constant blame, Morgan finally ended her marriage to Rodney in 2020. The divorce was finalized that December, but her freedom quickly spiraled into terror.

After their split, Rodney claimed he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and even presented Morgan with what she later said on *48 Hours *was a falsified doctor's note. She let him stay at her house, and over the next several days, he begged Morgan for a second chance.

Eventually, Morgan's patience ran out. She told Rodney to leave and said she would be staying elsewhere on the night of Dec. 31, 2020. But just hours later, the new year began in horror.

In the early hours of Jan. 1, 2021, Morgan was asleep in her bed when a masked intruder forced their way into her home. The invader used a voice distorter to mimic Batman, making it difficult for Morgan to identify them.

The assailant brutally beat Morgan with a gun. "I could feel his finger on the trigger of the gun," she recalled to Fox 5 Atlanta in 2021. "And I was like, 'This is it. I'm gone.'"

The intruder then strangled her two times, "once to the point I barely had any breath left. I thought it was going to be my last breath," Morgan said.

Afterward, the intruder zip-tied Morgan's hands and sexually assaulted her. He then put a pillow case over her head and left her on the back deck. "On his way out he kept saying 'You messed up. You're going to be fine but we can't say that about your ex-husband. You're really going to miss him,'" Morgan recounted.

About 40 minutes later, Rodney appeared at the scene. Morgan told Fox 5 Atlanta his reaction was suspicious. "He was extremely shocked by what I looked like," she said. "But not a shock of 'Oh my gosh, who did this to you,' but 'Oh my gosh, look what I just did to her.'"

He freed Morgan and called 911, later telling authorities that he had come running after hearing knocks at his apartment window and her name being called. "Even though we're not married I'm supposed to try to protect her," he explained, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

Law enforcement were unconvinced and started investigating Rodney, skeptical of the narrative that painted him as his ex-wife's hero.

How did authorities link Rodney to Morgan's assault?

A press release from the Office of the District Attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit in Canton, Ga., detailed the shocking scope of evidence tying Rodney to the assault on Morgan. Investigators found a handgun in his car and zip ties in his apartment — the same type used to restrain Morgan during the attack.

Surveillance footage also captured Rodney leaving a Lowe's Home Improvement store with a pack of zip ties, even though he told police he didn't know what they were. Additional video showed him arriving at his apartment and leaving just minutes later in different clothes, casting serious doubt on his version of events leading up to the vicious attack.

Digital records painted a disturbing picture of deliberate planning. His phone and laptop contained searches like "how long before you starve to death," "how to change the sound of your voice," and "how long it takes to choke someone unconscious."

Additional content from Rodney's phone, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta, included copies of his ex-wife's texts and pictures he took of her in the shower. A suicide note and forged hospital invoice were also discovered.

Cherokee County District Attorney

On Jan. 3, 2021, Rodney was charged in connection with Morgan's attack, facing more than a dozen counts, including aggravated assault, sexual battery, and kidnapping.

Rodney was offered a plea deal to spare Morgan the ordeal of a trial, and he accepted, formally pleading guilty to 14 charges stemming from the incident. In August 2021, Rodney was handed a 70-year sentence — 25 years in prison and 45 on probation. He was also banned from contacting Morgan or their twins.

At the time of writing, Rodney is serving his sentence at Baldwin State Prison in Hardwick, Ga., per inmate records. He could potentially be released on Dec. 31, 2045.

Speaking on *48 Hours*, Rodney's mother, Kathy Metzer, shared that his type 1 diabetes has taken a toll in prison, and his health is rapidly declining. "I'm absolutely worried he's going to die," she said.
