John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's romance is back in the spotlight thanks to FX's Love Story — and not everyone is pleased with the retelling.
Created by Connor Hines and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, the series follows JFK Jr. (Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) from their first meeting in New York's fashion and media circles to their secret 1996 wedding and, ultimately, their tragic deaths in a 1999 plane crash.
The series also explores other chapters of Kennedy's life, including his five-year relationship with actress Daryl Hannah (Dree Hemingway), and Carolyn's close friendship with fashion designer Calvin Klein (Alessandro Nivola) and his then-wife, Kelly Klein (Leila George).
Each episode opens with a disclaimer noting that some characters and events have been "dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes." Even so, the show has drawn criticism from members of the Kennedy family and others connected to the famous political dynasty.
"If you want to know someone who has never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy," JFK Jr.'s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, said during a March 2026 interview with CBS Sunday Morning. "I would just want people who do watch the show to watch it with one letter in mind, and that's a capital 'F' for fiction."

Daryl Hannah called Love Story a "tragedy-exploiting" TV series

Love Story revisits Hannah's past relationship with JFK Jr., and the actress — who has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years — addressed her portrayal in a March 2026 op-ed for The New York Times.
"I have generally chosen not to respond to media coverage of me. I have long believed that engaging with distortion often amplifies it," she wrote. "But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to portray her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident."
In the series, Hannah is depicted throwing a cocaine-filled party for friends and pressuring JFK Jr. to commit to their relationship — scenes the Splash alum said are entirely fabricated.
"The character 'Daryl Hannah' portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue," she continued.
Jack Schlossberg said Love Story is a "grotesque display" of JFK Jr.'s life

Schlossberg, JFK Jr.'s nephew, has been outspoken about his disapproval of Love Story. While he does not appear in the series, his mother, Caroline Kennedy, plays a prominent role.

During a March 2026 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Schlossberg did not hold back when discussing the show.
"[Ryan Murphy] knows nothing about what he's talking about, and he's making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else's life," he said, before urging the producer to consider giving back.
"I would hope Mr. Murphy would donate some of the millions of dollars of profits he's making to some of the causes John championed throughout his life," Schlossberg added.

Douglas Kennedy, JFK Jr.'s cousin and one of Ethel Kennedy and U.S. Sen. Robert "Bobby" F. Kennedy's 11 children, was among those who publicly defended Hannah, calling her portrayal in Love Story "unfortunate."
"Daryl Hannah was great," he told Page Six in March 2026. "Whenever I saw her, she was very sweet and had [John's] best interests at heart. I think that's a misrepresentation."
Douglas also spoke warmly about Carolyn, saying that "everybody around Carolyn loved Carolyn." He went on to describe his cousin as the "leader of my generation" and "irreplaceable."
"It's difficult to capture the intricacies of people's lives in movies or television," he continued. "If you know people, these types of things often fail in capturing the essence of who people were."
Kelly Klein described the fashion in Love Story as "spot on"

Love Story also highlights the friendship between Carolyn and Kelly, the then-wife of Calvin, during the years that Carolyn worked as a publicist for the American fashion house.
On the day the FX series premiered, Kelly shared a photo of Carolyn on Instagram alongside the caption, "Thinking of you tonight!!!"
Kelly praised Hines and Murphy, particularly for the show's attention to detail in recreating the era's fashion and Calvin Klein office culture.
"Watching @lovestoryfx is a trip down memory lane! To relive the essence of the 90s and the way we dressed and the way the office looked was spot on!" she wrote on Instagram in a separate post. "It may not be perfect, but it captures 10 years of my life with and without CBK!"
