Javier Bardem has gone De Niro crazy as felon Max Cady in "Cape Fear."
Apple TV released the first trailer of the 10-episode drama series (premiering June 5) that re-imagines the pulpy 1991 Martin Scorsese horror thriller "Cape Fear," which starred Robert De Niro as the prison-tattooed Cady more than three decades ago.
Bardem has gone the extra mile on the tattoos for his Cady, who is bent on revenge for his prison stint, which had originally been a life sentence. Cady has a scythe-wielding grim reaper tattoo on his back with "Lost" inked across his right knuckles and "Past" on his left. (De Niro's Cady had the words "Love" and "Hate" tattooed across his knuckles.)

Javier Bardem as Max Cady in the Apple TV series "Cape Fear," next to Robert De Niro in the 1991 original film.
The 1991 movie stars Nick Nolte as Sam Bowden, the one-time public defender who Cady haunts, blaming his long prison incarceration for rape on purposefully faulty defense tactics. Jessica Lange stars as Sam's wife Leigh, and Juliette Lewis rocketed into stardom as daughter Danielle Bowden in the Oscar-nominated performance.
Amy Adams stars in and executive produces "Cape Fear" for Apple TV.Cast of Javier Bardem's 'Cape Fear' includes Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, more
The AppleTV+ series effectively changes the roles, making Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson the husband-wife legal team Anna and Tom Bowden, jointly responsible for putting Cady behind bars. When Cady gets out of prison, he wants Biblical vengeance on both of them and their family.

John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel "The Executioners" is the source material for the Gregory Peck 1962 movie version of "Cape Fear" with Robert Mitchum as Max Cady. Scorsese and De Niro followed in 1991, with De Niro earning an Oscar nomination for his performance.
Bardem has brought life to some of the great villains of our era, from Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men" to Raoul Silva in the Bond film "Skyfall."
Scorsese is a series executive producer along with Steven Spielberg, who executive-produced the movie.
