Brady Bunch star Eve Plumb is recalling the tension that her on-screen father, Robert Reed, had with the show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, on set

Plumb said she would sometimes hear a "door slam" when they were having an argument

But despite the tension, she said she always found solace in Florence Henderson, who played the matriarch of the Brady family

Brady Bunch star Eve Plumb is recalling the moments Robert Reed famously clashed with the show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, on set.

In an interview with Woman's World for her new memoir, Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond, Plumb, who played Jan Brady in the series, said Reed and Schwartz often got into arguments over the tone and direction of the show.

"We knew there was tension," she admitted. "You'd hear the door slam, and then we'd go on and do something else. It's like it is in any family—when there's discord, you figure out a way to get through it."

Still, Plumb, who was cast in the show at just 11, noted that there was a strong sense of family on set and the adults often guided the young actors. She particularly remembered being close to Florence Henderson, who played her on-screen mother, Carol Brady, opposite Reed's Mike Brady.

"I get flashes of remembering standing next to Florence on the set under the hot lights," she said. "There was just this feeling of safety and of respect. You looked to them as an adult, as far as direction goes about what's going on in the world, because you're a child and they have to tell you what's going on."

Henderson had many qualities that Plumb admired. She recalled the late actress being an amazing and funny person.

"She was beautiful, and she smelled good, and we all just admired her," she said. "And she was funny. As we grew up and did those later shows, she could tell a dirty joke—just hilarious."

"I wish I could remember them, because she was so funny and entertaining," Plumb continued. "She's what I call a good celebrity. She was really, really responsible to her fans and to her career and had her rules that worked. She just was a great professional."

As for her relationship with Reed, Plumb said that one was more distant. The Blue Bloods star said she didn't have a lot of personal conversations with Reed, but despite that, she remembers him being a "very kind and thoughtful and talented" person.

"He was sophisticated—loved opera, had a gorgeous house in Pasadena," she said. "I didn't know him on a 'let's have lunch' level, but all of my dealings with him were professional and pleasant."

Plumb recalled one time when Reed surprised the cast with a trip to New York City and a cruise.

"Who does that?" she said. "A week at the Plaza for all of us—I don't know what it cost. I couldn't do it now."

Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond is out April 28, 2026.
