The Daredevil: Born Again star, 43, gives a rare comment about his experience with fatherhood while speaking with PEOPLE at the show's season 2 launch event in New York City on Monday, March 23.

While speaking about the show's heavy themes, he says a challenge he has overcome in his life and feels proud of is "being a parent."

"Sometimes with the challenges that come with being a father and a parent, being right-sized in a moment that's very challenging feels like a huge victory," Cox, who shares a daughter and son with his wife, television producer Samantha Thomas, says.

"I'm sorry if that's trite, but I think when you're able to be a good version of yourself, despite the fact that things are very difficult, and you're very tired and very overwhelmed, and all of those things, is a good victory," he continues.

Cox and Thomas, who tied the knot in 2018, welcomed their daughter in 2016 and son in 2020. The couple tends to keep their private life under wraps and have not publicly disclosed the names of their children.

The two both have history with Marvel — with Cox starring as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in several projects, and Thomas previously serving as a producer for the company.

Cox and Thomas met while they were working together on the first season of Netflix's Daredevil. The show, created by Drew Goddard and also starring Vincent D'Onofrio, ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018.

Cox reprises his role as the blind-lawyer-slash-masked-vigilante in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again, which premiered its first season in 2025. He serves as an executive producer on the second season but tells PEOPLE that it didn't change how he showed up on set because "Marvel has always been so generous with their collaboration."

"They've always involved me and [costar] Vincent [D'Onofrio]. They've always come to us, asked our opinion, taken our insights and our notes. In that respect, nothing's changed and really it was just a great honor to be asked," he says.

Cox previously spoke with PEOPLE about his home life while promoting his 2025 movie Merv about a couple co-parenting their dog after a split.

"My wife and our dog have a very effed-up relationship," he joked. "They're way too close."

"Because I've been working a lot and I've been away, our dog has definitely replaced me in the family," the actor continued.
