Charley Pride has established a strong reputation in the music industry as one of the most prominent country artists of the late 1960s.

By the 1970s, he had proven his place in the genre among country music's biggest stars by releasing a string of notable songs. One of his standout songs was the chart-topping track "She's Just an Old Love Turned Memory."

Released in 1977 under RCA Victor Records, it was the title track and the second single from his twenty-third studio album.

Forty-nine years ago today, Pride reaffirmed his continued dominance in country music after his song entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at No. 1.

Not only did it top the rankings, but it also made "She's Just an Old Love Turned Memory" his 17th number-one single.

At the time, listeners were captivated by the country ballad's smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics, helping it spend a total of 10 weeks on the Billboard Country chart, including one week at No. 1.

In addition, the song's popularity extended beyond the U.S. Billboard charts as it also ranked first on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

Written by country music's sought-after composer John Schweers, he had teamed up with Pride on previous tracks like "Don't Fight the Feelings of Love" and "Amazing Love," both released in 1973.

Behind 'She's Just an Old Love Turned Memory': How a Producer Helped Charley Pride Perfect His Song

Despite the song topping the chart in 1977, the recording was not as smooth as many might have thought.

During the recording, he had a hard time pronouncing a word in a lyric, particularly the first line of the song.

Instead of "I phoned her today," it sounded like "I honed her today" when he sang it, as shared by Wide Open Country.

As a result, producer Jerry Bradley suggested changing the line to "I called her today."

At first, the late country icon hesitated but ultimately agreed. It was a decision that helped the recording proceed smoothly and preserved the song's emotional impact, making it one of his legendary songs.

Besides "She's Just an Old Love Turned Memory," Pride had 28 chart-topping tracks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.

These include "Kiss an Angel Good Morning," "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone," "Crystal Chandeliers," "Mountain of Love," "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)" and more.
