Catherine and Heathcliff aren't destined lovers with intertwined souls – not like Lois and Hal are.
Emily Brontë's enduring classic Wuthering Heights has been a catalyst for controversy since it first hit shelves in 1847, but the most recent film adaptation has sparked more widespread and heated debate about the story of Northern English landowners and their desires than ever before. Director Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights is a stylized and indulgently loose take on the classic story that has been dissected, discussed and postulated upon by the greatest minds in literature, including by Mrs. Wilkerson and her son.
Long before Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi lit up the box office and Letterboxd with their provocative and critically divisive performances in Wuthering Heights, Malcolm in the Middle went straight to the center of the book's themes and its characters' folly in a scene that the Disney Plus U.K. Instagram account recently reposted for no particular reason…
The above scene comes from the Malcolm in the Middle Season Five episode, in which Malcolm joined the Lucky Aide company softball team only to grow disgruntled at the overbearing coaching of the team's manager, Lois. In this scene, Lois demonstrated how her unyielding demands in both athletics and academics do occasionally come from a place of expertise.
It's hard to say how Lois would have graded Fennell's Wuthering Heights. However, given how, according to the more displeased critical reviews, the director prioritized provocative imagery over engaging with the source material on a subtextual level, we can't imagine that Lois would be one of the many moviegoers who swooned at the movie's Fifty Shades of Jane Austen-esque eroticism.

Meanwhile, fans of both Malcolm in the Middle and Brontë's master work are wondering if, like the softball team, the movie could have used Lois' firm hand gripping the wheel. "let her direct the movie at least she gets it," the top commenter wrote under the Instagram post.
"A certain someone should have watched this before making that fanfiction," another fan snarked.
One more added, "Disney posting this after all the backlash the new movie from WB got is hilarious."
With the Malcolm in the Middle revival coming on April 10th, we can only hope that Lois will bless us with more literary criticism to drop on the internet cinephiles.
