BRUSSELS (AP) — European allies at NATO on Thursday brushed aside concerns that the United States has stepped back from its leadership role of the world's biggest security organization, leaving them and Canada to do the lion's share of defending Europe.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not attend Thursday's gathering of defense ministers at NATO headquarters in Brussels. His no-show came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio skipped the last meeting of NATO foreign ministers in December.

It's rare for members of a U.S. administration to miss a meeting of the organization's top decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, at the level of ministers, let alone two meetings in a row. Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby was sent in Hegseth's place.

"Sadly for him, he is missing a good party," Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir told reporters. "Of course, it's always better that the ministers attend here, but I would not describe it as a bad signal."

"I'm not disappointed," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said. "Each of us has a full agenda. And one time the American defense minister is here, and one time not, so it's his decision and his duties he has to fulfill."

How times have changed

When asked what NATO's purpose was in its infancy in 1949, NATO's first secretary-general, the British general and diplomat Lord Hastings Ismay, was reputed to have replied: "To keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down."

Nowadays, Germany is stepping up. After Russia invaded Ukraine four years ago, it vowed to spend 100 billion euros ($118 billion) to modernize its armed forces in coming years.

A big part of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte's job is to keep the Americans in.

"They have to take care of the whole world. This is the United States," Rutte told reporters before chairing the meeting. "I totally accept it, agree with it."

"They have always consistently pleaded for Europe doing more, Canada doing more, taking more care of the defense of NATO territory, of course in conjunction with the United States," he said.

That means more European spending on conventional weapons and defense, while the U.S. guarantees NATO's nuclear deterrent.

But doubts linger, and surprises from the Trump administration cannot be ruled out. Allies still wonder whether more U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Europe.

"What for me is the most important is the no-surprise policy that has been agreed between the NATO secretary-general and the U.S.," Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said.

Stepping back

Publicly at least, the Trump administration is doing much less at NATO. A year ago, Hegseth warned that America's security priorities lie elsewhere and that Europe would have to look after itself, and Ukraine in its battle against Russia's full-scale invasion.

Supplies of U.S. guns and money that were sent to Ukraine by the previous administration of President Joe Biden have dried up under Trump. European allies and Canada are obliged to buy weapons from the United States to donate now.

Western backers of Ukraine were also meeting at NATO on Thursday to drum up more military support. A scheme proudly championed by the Pentagon under Biden, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group is now chaired by the U.K. and Germany.

U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey announced that Britain would provide "an extra half a billion pounds ($682 million) in urgent air defense to Ukraine. This is Britain being a force for good in the world, building a new deal for European security within NATO."

Sweden also intends to fund the purchase of more American weapons. The Netherlands will send more flight simulators to help Ukrainian fighter pilots train to fly F-16 jets.

Arctic Sentry

The one "deliverable" from Thursday's meeting was the announcement that NATO would launch Arctic Sentry, its response to U.S. security concerns in the high north, and an attempt to dissuade Trump from trying to seize Greenland.

It's ostensibly aimed at countering Russian and Chinese activities or influence in the Arctic region.

But Arctic Sentry is essentially a rebranding exercise. National drills already underway in the region, like those run by Denmark and Norway, will be brought under the NATO umbrella and overseen by the organization's military chief.

It is not a long-term NATO operation or mission.

Denmark, France, Germany will take part in the "military activities" happening under Arctic Sentry, but they have not said in what way. Finland and Sweden are likely to get involved. Belgium is considering what role it might play.

It remains unclear what role, if any, the United States will take.

"It can't just be more from the United States," U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said ahead of Thursday's meeting. "We need capable allies that are ready and strong, that can bring assets to all of these areas of our collective security."

Trump's renewed threats last month to annex Greenland — a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark — have deeply shaken the rest of the alliance. NATO's primary role is to defend the territory of its 32 member states, not to undermine it.

European allies and Canada hope that Arctic Sentry and ongoing talks between the Trump administration, Denmark and Greenland will allow NATO to move on from the dispute and focus on Europe's real security priority, Russia's war on Ukraine.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said the Arctic security arrangement at least means that "we stop having some food fights over the Atlantic."

"I think that the Greenland saga was not the best moment of NATO (over) the last 76 years," he told reporters. "It was a crisis that was not needed."

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The advocate general for European Union's highest court on Thursday urged the court to annul a 2023 European Commission decision to release billions in funding to Hungary that had been suspended over rule-of-law and corruption concerns.

The European Commission in 2022 suspended the money to Budapest over what it said was democratic backsliding by Hungary's right-wing populist government and failures to tackle corruption and ensure judicial independence. A year later, the Commission found that the government had carried out sufficient reforms to have around 10.2 billion euros ($12.1 billion) released.

But in a non-binding opinion on Thursday, Advocate General Tamara Ćapeta urged the European Court of Justice to annul the decision that unfroze the funds, arguing that Hungary had not carried out the required judicial reforms by the time they were released.

While not legally binding, such opinions are often followed by the court.

Hungary, a major net recipient of EU funds, has come under increasing criticism for veering away from democratic norms. The Commission has for more than a decade accused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of dismantling democratic institutions, taking control of the media and infringing on minority rights. Orbán, who has been in office since 2010, rejects the accusations and has denounced them as interference in Hungary's sovereignty.

When it suspended funds to Hungary, the Commission was worried about, among other things, public procurement — purchases by the state of goods and services or for the execution of projects using EU money. The bloc has feared that such contracts have allowed Orbán's government to channel EU funding into the businesses of politically connected insiders.

The case contesting the Commission's release of funds was brought in 2024 by the European Parliament, which argued the Commission had committed errors in determining Hungary was eligible to receive the funding.

In her opinion, Ćapeta wrote that the Commission had "incorrectly applied the requirements imposed on Hungary when it permitted, without any explanation, the disbursement of the budget before the required legislative reforms had entered into force or were being applied."

Billions in additional EU funding remain frozen to Hungary, a shortfall in its budget that has contributed to years of economic stagnation. Orbán, an advocate of greater authority for national governments among the EU's 27 member states, has accused the bloc of interfering in his country's internal affairs and using the distribution of funds as a means of coercion.

The autocratic leader faces what will likely be the biggest challenge of his 16 years in power during elections in April, where a center-right challenger, Péter Magyar and his Tisza party, hold a substantial lead in most polls.

Magyar has promised to restore Hungary's democratic institutions and pursue a more constructive relationship with the EU, and to quickly bring home the frozen funds.

What the SAVE Act means for your vote

The Republican-led House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill favored by President Donald Trump to mandate proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

The bill, called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE America Act, would require voters show a government-issued photo ID to cast their ballots. This element could potentially prevent millions of Americans from voting due to gaps in accessing an ID, according to independent experts and voting rights groups.

Another factor for Americans: Millions of women whose married names don't match the surname on their birth certificates or passports could face extra hurdles to register to vote and cast their ballots, according to the Brennan Center.

The legislation faces an uncertain future in the GOP-controlled Senate. Trump has indicated he would sign the bill if it fully passes.

Trump lost on tariffs. The GOP-led House of Representatives voted to overturn the president's tariffs on Canada after six Republicans joined with House Democrats.

Lawmakers accused AG Pam Bondi of a DOJ cover-up on Epstein: In what was a raucous House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, lawmakers of both parties accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of overseeing a Justice Department cover-up of bombshell allegations in the latest tranche of Jeffrey Epstein documents — and failing to protect women who alleged he abused them.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The suspect in a school shooting in Canada was an 18-year-old who had a history of police visits to her home to check on her mental health, authorities said Wednesday, a day after the attack that killed eight people in a remote part of British Columbia.

Police said Jesse Van Rootselaar was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound following the assault on a school in the small mountain community of Tumbler Ridge.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said Van Rootselaar first killed her mother and stepbrother at the family home before attacking the nearby school. She had a history of mental health contacts with police, he said.

The motive was unclear.

Police initially said nine people were killed Tuesday, but McDonald clarified Wednesday that there were eight fatalities. McDonald said the discrepancy arose from a victim who was airlifted to a medical center. Authorities mistakenly thought that person had died.

More than 25 people were wounded.

The town is near the provincial border with Alberta

The town of 2,700 people in the Canadian Rockies is more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) northeast of Vancouver, near the provincial border with Alberta.

Police said the victims included a 39-year-old teacher and five students, ages 12 to 13.

The killings at the home occurred first, McDonald said. A young family member at the home went to a neighbor, who called police. The bodies of the suspect's mother, who was also 39, and her 11-year-old stepbrother were found at the home.

At the school, one victim was found in a stairwell and the rest were found in the library, McDonald believed. The suspect was not related to any of the victims at the school, he said.

"There is no information at this point that anyone was specifically targeted," McDonald said.

Police recovered a long gun and a modified handgun. McDonald said officers arrived at the school two minutes after the initial call. When they arrived, shots were fired in their direction.

"Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you, and Canada stands by you," an emotional Prime Minister Mark Carney said as he arrived in Parliament.

Deadliest rampage since 2020

The attack was Canada's deadliest rampage since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that left another nine dead.

Carney said flags at government buildings will be flown at half-staff for seven days and added: "We will get through this."

Shelley Quist said her neighbor across the street lost her 12-year-old. "We heard his mom. She was in the street crying. She wanted her son's body," Quist said.

Quist said her 17-year-old son, Darian, was on lockdown in the school for more than two hours. The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students in grades 7 to 12.

"The grade sevens and eights, I think, were upstairs in the library, and that's where the shooter went," she said. Her son was in the library just 15 minutes prior to the attack.

Quist was working at the hospital down the street when the shooting started.

"I was about to go run down to the school, but my coworker held me back. And then I was able to get Darian on the phone to know he was OK," she said.

Darian Quist said he knew the attack was real when the principal came down the halls and ordered doors to be closed. He said fellow students texted him pictures of blood while he remained locked down in a classroom.

"We used the desk to block the doors," he said.

School shootings are rare in Canada, which has strict gun-control laws. The government has responded to previous mass shootings with gun-control measures, including a recently broadened ban on all guns it considers assault weapons.

A video showed students walking out with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter circled overhead.

A makeshift memorial of flowers and stuffed toys began to grow at the edge of the school grounds. Residents met nearby to comfort each other at the local community center.

Community is a 'big family'

Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka said it was "devastating" to learn how many had died in the community, which he called a "big family."

"I broke down," Krakowka said. "I have lived here for 18 years. I probably know every one of the victims."

The Rev. George Rowe of Tumbler Ridge Fellowship Baptist Church once taught at the high school, and his three children graduated from there.

"To walk through the corridors of that school will never be the same again," he said.

The school district said the high school and elementary school will be closed for the rest of the week.

Carney's office said he called off a planned trip to Europe for the Munich Security Conference.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said the full extent of what happened won't sink in for some time.

"I can tell you this is an incredibly strong community. Everybody is worried about somebody else," Eby said outside the townhall.

*Dawson's Creek*'s doe-eyed approach to teen heartache, longing, and optimism still resonates decades after the WB series ended in 2003. As ** noted in 2018, it deserves credit for cultivating a new era in teen TV.

Created in 1998 by Kevin Williamson, who would go on to create the *Vampire Diaries *and pen several *Scream* entries, the drama starred James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson as lovelorn teenagers in the New England town of Capeside. Across six seasons and 128 episodes, viewers grew alongside the core four as they each learned about heartache the hard way.

"It was really wholesome and it was really Americana," said Greg Berlanti, a former *Dawson's Creek* showrunner, as part of EW's reunion coverage in 2018. "I think if people want a perfect snapshot of what it was like to come of age in the '90s and be a young person in that moment, *Dawson'*s will always be a time capsule of that."**

On Feb. 11, 2026, fans mourned the loss of Van Der Beek, who died at age 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer.

Below, see the *Dawson's Creek* cast, then and now.

After popping up in episodes of *Clarissa Explains It All* and *As the World Turns*, James Van Der Beek led *Dawson's Creek* as title character Dawson Leary, appearing on the show for the entirety of its five-year run. During that time, Van Der Beek also hit the big screen in *Varsity Blues* (1999) and *The Rules of Attraction* (2002).

After the show wrapped, the actor guested on some of the most popular shows on TV, including *Criminal Minds*, *Ugly Betty*, *One Tree Hill*, and *How I Met Your Mother.* He also took leading roles on *Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23 *and *CSI: Cyber*.

He went on to play small roles in Alexander Payne's *Downsizing* (2017) and Justin Simeon's *Bad Hair* (2020), and also appeared on several episodes of the FX series *Pose. *

After Van Der Beek revealed he'd been diagnosed with colorectal cancer in late 2024, his former *Dawson's Creek* castmates reunited for an August 2025 event to help raise money for his treatment.

Van Der Beek couldn't attend due to illness, but he spoke on how much it meant to him in a December 2025 *Today* interview. "As crushed as I was not being able to go to that *Dawson's Creek* reunion, my family got to go. And I was Zooming in on that night and they got a standing ovation just for taking their seats," he recalled. "And all that love that would have otherwise been directed at me, was directed at my family. It was just one of the most beautiful moments I've ever gotten to witness. I'm just so grateful to the fans for doing that."

The actor continued to work during his treatment, appearing on episodes of the Prime Video series *Overcompensating* and taking a role in the upcoming *Legally Blonde* prequel *Elle*.

He died at age 48 on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. "He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace," said Kimberly in a statement. "There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

Katie Holmes (Joey Potter)

Over the past few years, Holmes has focused on theater, starring in a 2024 *Our Town* revival and an off-Broadway production of Henrik Ibsen's *Hedda Gabler*. She also guested on a 2025 episode of Peacock's *Poker Face*.

Michelle Williams (Jen Lindley)

Williams juped on the comic book movie bandwagon in 2018, starring opposite Tom Hardy in *Venom *and its 2021 sequel. She earned her fifth Oscar nomination for her performance in Steven Spielberg's *The Fabelmans, *which granted celebration from her former *Dawson's Creek* costars.

In 2025, she starred in and executive produced *Dying for Sex*, an acclaimed Hulu drama that netted her an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe.**

Amelia Gray is continuing to make her mark on the fashion world. The model and rising runway regular recently walked for Tory Burch's Fall/Winter 2026 collection during New York Fashion Week. Gray's brown leather midi skirt fell just below the knee and featured a sharp front slit that added movement and a subtle hint of drama with every step. It was styled with a grey top layered under a textured ochre coloured cardigan detailed with shimmering accents.

Accessories elevated the outfit further. She carried a structured brown shoulder bag accented with small metallic studs, adding a hint of toughness to the soft look. Around her neck, a striking fish-shaped pendant necklace stood out, lending an almost whimsical touch to the ensemble. With her hair pulled back and makeup kept minimal, Gray let the outfit speak for itself.

**This article contains spoilers for *The Masked Singer* season 14 episode 6, "*Twilight* Night."**

This week's episode of *The Masked Singer* really had a lot of bite to it.

Just ahead of Valentine's Day, Wednesday's show was "*Twilight* Night," dedicated to the film saga and its epic love story. To that end, special guest star singer-songwriter Christina Perri took the stage to perform her hit, "A Thousand Years."

The 2011 ballad, which was written by Perri and her producer David Hodges for *The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1*, was accompanied by a dance representing the love triangle between vampire Edward Cullen, human Bella Swan, and werewolf Jacob Black. (And we definitely didn't see that one coming.)

While the episode was full of blood-sucking fun, it only featured four masks this time around. Cat Witch sang "It Will Rain" by Bruno Mars to kick things off on a high note, 14 Karat Carrot went next with "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones, Stingray brought his hip gyrations to "Bad Habits" by Ed Sheeran, and Owl ended the night with "White Wedding" by Billy Idol.

Speaking of love stories, things got a bit weepy when Owl received a phone call clue from his Valentine. After some sniffles, he said, "It's great being with y'all and give it up for the dancers and the lady in red out there with the cabaret, I mean, wow."

After all of that, it was time for the first vote of the night. Cat Witch and 14 Karat Carrot were picked to move on, which left Stingray and Owl to battle it out in the Vampire Royale. Fittingly, both contestants had to perform their own version of Pat Benatar's classic power ballad "Love Is a Battlefield."

But when it was all said and done, Stingray was chosen to advance in the competition while Owl was sent back to the nest. In what has become a rarity this season, none of the panelists correctly guessed the celebrity beneath the mask. Robin Thicke guessed Dennis Quaid, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg and Ken Jeong tag-teamed it and went with Ted Danson, and Rita Ora chose Kurt Russell.

When the giant Furby — uh, sorry, Owl — unmasked once and for all, it was two-time Grammy winner and "Achy Breaky Heart" crooner Billy Ray Cyrus. His appearance on the show comes two seasons after *The Masked Singer* did a special themed night dedicated to his daughter, Miley Cyrus.

And with that, only 10 contestants remain in the competition, including all three wildcards. Who will be eliminated next? What other wild interpretive dances will we get as part of these themed nights? Find out when *The Masked Singer* next airs, on Wednesday, Feb. 25.**
